Year 6 Swimming Proficiency Information
At Rockliffe Manor, we believe swimming is an essential life skill and part of our commitment to fostering a healthy, active lifestyle for all our pupils. In line with the National Curriculum requirements, our Year 6 pupils participate in swimming lessons when they are in year 5 to achieve the following proficiencies:
Swimming and Water Safety Outcomes for Year 6
1. Swim Competently, Confidently, and Proficiently Over a Distance of at Least 25 Metres:
- 16/22 of Year 6 pupils who can swim 25 metres independently, equating to 73%.
2. Use a Range of Strokes Effectively (e.g., Front Crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke):
- 16/22 of Year 6 pupils who can demonstrate effective use of multiple strokes, equating to 73%.
3. Perform Safe Self-Rescue in a Range of Water-Based Situations:
- 16/22 of Year 6 pupils who have learned safe self-rescue techniques, equating to 73%.
Swimming Lessons and Curriculum
- Swimming lessons are conducted by qualified swimming instructors and are held at Thamesmere leisure centre
- Lessons include a combination of stroke technique, distance swimming, and water safety skills.
- By the end of Year 6, our aim is for all pupils to meet the national swimming proficiency standards.
